AdBlock detection

Updated over 5 months ago

What is an AdBlocker?

AdBlock is a browser extension that blocks advertisements from displaying on websites. While AdBlock typically doesn't prevent OptiMonk campaigns from displaying, it can sometimes interfere with website functionality and cause certain elements to load incorrectly or not appear at all.

Important: If you've installed OptiMonk via Google Tag Manager (GTM), AdBlock will prevent your campaigns from displaying. This occurs because AdBlock blocks GTM itself, which in turn prevents OptiMonk from loading.

Why Use AdBlock Segmentation?

AdBlock segmentation allows you to create targeted messages for visitors using ad blockers. Common use cases include:

  • Ad revenue protection: Request that visitors disable AdBlock to support your site

  • Functionality warnings: Alert users when AdBlock interferes with website features

  • Enhanced user experience: Inform visitors about missing content or broken elements caused by ad blocking

How to use AdBlock segmentation?

Create targeted campaigns specifically for AdBlock users to communicate the benefits of disabling their ad blocker, ensuring they have full access to your site's content and features. (As a result, all of your content will be available for AdBlock users, too.)

Step 1: Access Your Campaign

Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/login/en, select Campaigns from the left sidebar, and choose the campaign you want to configure for AdBlock segmentation.
