# Integrating OptiMonk with Campaign Monitor

The [Campaign Monitor](http://www.campaignmonitor.com) integration with [OptiMonk](https://www.optimonk.com/) adds subscribers to your Campaign Monitor list when they fill out an OptiMonk popup form. It comes in handy if you run marketing campaigns regularly, so the subscribers who signed up via OptiMonk also get news about your upcoming promotions.

**Before you start:** you need a Campaign Monitor account and a campaign in OptiMonk whose popup is already built. The field mapping step reads the input fields straight from your popup, so there is nothing to map until the popup exists.

---

## Step 1: Find your Campaign Monitor API key

In Campaign Monitor, click **Account Settings** in the top menu bar, then **API keys** in the right column menu. Click **Show API key** and copy the value.

---

## Step 2: Connect Campaign Monitor to your campaign

1. Open **Campaigns** in the left menu and click the campaign you want to connect with Campaign Monitor.
2. Open the **Integrations** tab of the campaign.
3. Click **Add integration**. If the campaign has no integration yet, the same step is offered as *Connect your email or SMS tool*.
4. **Provider** step: type `campaign` into the *Search providers…* box and pick **Campaign Monitor** from the **All providers** grid. Accounts you have already connected are listed above the grid, under *Your connected accounts*.
5. **Account** step: choose a Campaign Monitor account you have already connected, or fill in the credential form to add a new one.

- **Name (optional)** — a label so you recognise this connection later.
- **API key** — paste the key from Step 1. The form reminds you where it lives: *Account Settings -> API Key*.

Click **Connect**.

There is no separate **Test Connection** button any more. OptiMonk checks the key while it saves the connection: if the key is wrong, the wizard stays on this step and shows *Connection failed — check the credentials* under the form. A successful connect takes you straight to the next step.
6. **Settings** step: two dropdowns, one after the other.

- **Client** — the Campaign Monitor client whose lists you want to use.
- **List** — the subscriber list new signups should join. This dropdown stays greyed out until you pick a client, and reloads whenever you change the client.

Click **Continue**.
7. **Field mapping** step: decide where each popup field goes in Campaign Monitor (see below), then click **Save integration**.

That's it. Whenever a visitor signs up through your popup, they are added to the Campaign Monitor list you picked.

**Draft vs. live:** if the campaign has not been published yet, the integration is shown with a **Draft** pill and the note *Saved as draft — it goes live when you publish the campaign.* On a published campaign the integration is applied right away and shows as **Active**.

## Field mapping

The mapping table has two columns: **Popup field** on the left (every input your popup collects) and **Campaign Monitor field** on the right. OptiMonk pre-fills the mapping with its own suggestions, so in most cases you only need to check it.

- The **email** field is fixed — it always maps to `email`.
- Pick **Don't sync** for any popup field you don't want to send.
- If Campaign Monitor returns the custom fields of the selected list, the right column is a dropdown. If it doesn't, you get a free-text box instead and the hint *Type the exact Campaign Monitor field or property name (e.g. first_name). Leave empty to skip a field.*

### Marking where a subscriber came from

The old admin had a *Source Field name* dropdown with a **Refresh** button next to it. That is now a **static field**: instead of picking a "source" field, you send a fixed value with every submission.

1. In Campaign Monitor, open **Lists & Subscribers**, select the list you are sending subscribers to, click **Custom fields** in the right column menu, then **Add custom field**. Name it `OptiMonk` and check that the Data Type is **Text**.
2. Back in the OptiMonk mapping step, scroll to **Static fields** and click **Add static field**. Type the value you want stored on the left (for example `OptiMonk` or `Summer Ad Campaign`) and choose the `OptiMonk` custom field on the right.

There is no Refresh button: the field list is fetched when the mapping step opens, so if you add the custom field in Campaign Monitor after opening the wizard, go **Back** one step and forward again.

---

## Change or remove the integration

The Integrations tab lists every integration on the campaign.

- **Change list** reopens the wizard at the Settings step, so you can pick a different client or list and go on to the mapping.
- The bin icon removes the integration from this campaign: *Remove from this campaign? The account connection stays and can be added again.* Your Campaign Monitor API key is not deleted, so you can reuse the same connection on another campaign.
