To give you a short and simple answer, yes, it is.
You might wonder how it’s ensured. Now, let’s see the reasons in details!
As a reminder, Google’s new regulation is only applied on mobile pages, which makes OptiMonk absolutely Google friendly in PC and Mac environment.
What about mobile pages?
According to Google’s official announcement 85% of all websites are now mobile friendly. Since the main goal of Google is to continuosly improve the mobile user experience this motivates them to set up new criteria to meet by website owners to describe their sites as mobile friendly.
From January, 2017 Google is ranking those mobile pages differently, which use „intrusive” popups. Of course, Google still uses a complex algorithm for ranking, which means that popups on mobile pages is only one factor Google takes into account. Details of what kind of popups Google supports and does not support can be read both in our blog article on the topic and in the official announcement of Google.
Let’s see how it affects OptiMonk users!
As delivering relevant content to users is still the number one priority of Google they are ranking those mobile pages differently which don’t respect this criteria and show different content to their visitors than expected based on the Google search results.
This means that mainly those mobile pages can expect a negative change in their rankings, which show a popup to their organic traffic right after they arrived on the landing page from Google or while browsing on that page.
Onsite retargeting is not just a very powerful tool to recover your abandoning visitors but also a very flexible technology that can adopt to any circumstances – that’s why monitoring the visitors’ actual behaviour has always been a core value of OptiMonk.
With this treasure in your pocket, now let’s take a look at what to do to ensure your OptiMonk popups are a 100% Google friendly!
- don’t show the popups on your mobile pages right after your visitors arrived to certain landing pages through Google. As an optimization specialist I’d also advice the same. It’s always important to remember that OptiMonk was created to help you convert more of your traffic but to do so you need to know how to deliver value to your visitors. By showing a popup to them right after they landed on your site you’re certainly not serving this purpose.
- Instead, you can choose from these options:
- Campaign settings > Who should see the popup? > Visitors who have spent at least 'X' seconds browsing the website
Tip: check the average time spent on your website by mobile visitors and set it up accordingly - Campaign settings > Who should see the popup? > Visitors from specific source URLs
Tip: here you can set up who to target based on the source of your visitors. If, for some reasons, you insist on showing a popup on the same page where your visitors landed you can set up a popup campaign which targets those who arrived from any other sources but organic. In this case it’s still recommended to make a copy of this campaign and use the copied version to target your organic traffic only (taking Google’s regulations into account).
With these setting options in mind you can be a 100% sure that OptiMonk is Google friendly and you don’t have to worry about your rankings.
We are also continously checking our own rankings on the sites and pages where we use mobile OptiMonk popups and we haven’t noticed any changes in the number of organic unique visitors yet.
If you are still not sure how to apply onsite retargeting on your mobile pages, please remember that you can always schedule a short meeting with us and we’ll be here to help you set up your campaigns both Google and user friendly.
