Cookie Segmentation

Cookie Segmentation is a Pro Feature among our segmentation rules that allows you to filter your visitors based on their cookies.

You can set it up with the following steps:

1) Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/login/en

2) Select Campaigns on the left:

You will be able to customize the settings on the next page:

6.1) First, you need to define the name of the cookie you want to use for segmentation. Then you need to select whether it is a text or a number:

6.2) Next, you need to choose a rule you want to use for the cookie value from the dropdown menu:

6.3) Next, you need to define the cookie value:

6.4) You can add additional rules for cookie segmentation. You can decide to use an "AND" or an "OR" relation for the rules. The "AND" relation means that the popup will only show up when ALL the rules are met. The "OR" relation means that the popup will show up when AT LEAST ONE rule is met. You can add a new cookie segmentation rule with "AND" relation with the Plus icon:

You can add a new cookie segmentation rule with "OR" relation by clicking Add new:

Example:

Here is a real-life example to help you understand the Cookie segmentation rule. I can use the Google Chrome browser to check the cookies my website uses. I have visited my website, then press Ctrl + Shift + i to see the Developer Tools of Google Chrome, then select Application from the menu:

I can check the Cookies that my website uses under Storage:

I could use one of these cookies to segment my visitors for my OptiMonk Campaign. Let's use the landing page cookie for this example:

mceclip10.png

You need to use the first column (Name) for the first field in your OptiMonk admin, and the second column (Value) for the last field in your OptiMonk admin:

mceclip11.png

With this setting, my popup will only show up to visitors who have "arrived" on my website on that specific page (landing page). The cookie value in this example is

%2Fproducts%2Famd-epyc%3Fvariant%3D32372912652332

which is generated from the URL the visitor landed on:

https://optitest123.myshopify.com/products/amd-epyc?variant=32372912652332

The highlighted part is the URL in this link, and you can see the cookie saves the landing URL of the visitor (the special characters are stored like this: "/" equals to "%2F", "-" stays the same, "?" equals to "%3F" and "=" equals to "%3D")

Please note that the type of cookies your website use depends on your website. If you have a developer for your website, you could discuss with the developer what kind of cookies your website uses, or if you use a service like Shopify, you could check their support page or contact their support for help on what type of cookies the website uses to track your visitors. We are also happy to help, of course :)

7) Click on Save then Next in the top right corner to save your settings:
