1. What are Segments?
A segment is a set of targeting rules for a given campaign that defines who will see your campaign. OptiMonk has multiple targeting rules you can choose from, and with Segments, you can manage these settings easily.
You can set up a segment for your campaign by choosing from the following three options:
- Predefined Segments
- Saved Segments
- Copy from Previous Campaign

2. Why use Segments in targeting?
It doesn’t matter if you're new to OptiMonk or an experienced user, this feature is sure to make your life easier.
🆕 Audience recommendations for Newbies:
If you’ve just started using OptiMonk and are not sure which settings would be the most relevant for your campaign, simply use our recommended Predefined Segment! Predefined Segments are automatically selected for your campaign based on the chosen template, making sure that the targeting rules match your campaign goal.
🔄 Custom segments for Power Users:
If you run multiple campaigns with the same targeting settings, this feature will save you a ton of time! Simply save your set of targeting rules as a custom Saved Segment and reuse them for any future campaign.
3. How to use Predefined Segments a.k.a. Audience Recommendations?
Not sure where to start with targeting? Audience recommendation is here for you! We added Predefined Segments to each campaign created from a template, so now you can choose from segments such as New visitors, Non-Subscribers, Active Shoppers, Returning visitors, Just Purchased visitors etc. - whatever suits your campaign goal best.
How to use a Predefined Segment?
1. Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/
2. Select Campaigns on the navbar.
3. Select the Campaign you wish to edit or create a new one.
4. Click on Edit settings on the right-hand side.
5. Click on Select Who should see the popup, and click on Load segment.
6. Here you’ll have all the Predefined Segments you can choose from. Select the one you would like to use then click on Next. When you click on Next, the targeting rules of your campaign will be updated to the new Predefined segment you selected.
7. As a final step, don't forget to save your settings by clicking on Next in the top right corner! :)
💡 Predefined Segments for Shopify & Non-Shopify users may be different.
4. How to create custom Saved Segments?
If you happen to use the same targeting rules in several campaigns, this feature will save you a ton of time. Simply save your setting as a custom segment and add it to any future campaigns.
How to save a set of targeting rules as a custom Saved Segment?
1. Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/
2. Select Campaigns on the navbar.
3. Select the Campaign of which targeting rules you want to save as a custom Saved Segment.
4. Click on Edit settings on the right-hand side.
5. Click on Select Who should see the popup, and click on Save as a segment.
6. Give a name to your custom segment and click on Save.
7. Go back to the Campaigns on the navbar and select the campaign where you would like to reuse your custom segment.
8. On the next page, click on Edit settings on the right-hand side.
9. Go to the Select Who should see the popup section and click on Load segment.
10. Under Saved segments, you will see all your saved custom segments. Select the one you wish to use and click on Next. On the next page, review your targeting rules and click on Next again.
11. Now the targeting rules of your campaign are updated to the custom Saved Segment you selected.
12. Click on Next in the top right corner to save your settings! :)
5. How to access and edit all your Saved Segments?
1. Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/
2. Select Audience on the navbar.
3. Select the Segments tab. Here you will see a list of all your Saved Segments created previously:
4. If you would like to modify a Saved Segment, simply click on the three dots on the right, then click on Edit:
5. On the next page, you will be able to either delete or add new targeting rules to your Segment:
6. To finalize your changes, please don’t forget to save your changes by clicking on the Save segment button.
6. How to Reuse the Targeting Rules of old campaigns?
There’s no reason to worry if you haven’t saved your targeting rules as a custom segment. You can still save yourself some manual labor by loading the targeting settings of any campaign you have created previously.
How to load a set of targeting rules from any existing campaign?
1. Log in to your OptiMonk account at https://app.optimonk.com/
2. Select Campaigns on the navbar.
3. Select the campaign you wish to edit or create a new one.
4. Click on Edit settings on the right-hand side.
5. Click on Select Who should see the popup, and click on Load segment.
6. Under Copy from previous campaign, you will see all the campaigns you have created previously. Select the one you wish to use and click on Next.
7. On the next page, you can review the targeting rules of the selected campaign.
8. When you click on Next again, the targeting rules of your campaign will be updated to the rules of the selected campaign.
9. Lastly, click on Next in the top right corner to save your settings! And you’re done! :)
7. Things to keep in mind when using Segments
- If you copy a Segment from a Shopify campaign to a Non-Shopify domain, Shopify-specific targeting rules will not be added to your campaign settings.
