This article covers the extra coupon features you get when your store runs on Shopify. For the basics — where the coupon settings live and how to upload a list of codes — read How to use coupon codes in OptiMonk campaigns first.
Where these settings are: open your popup in the editor and click Coupon in the top bar. The panel that opens is called Coupon code (type, code pool, fallback). Everything below happens there.
💡 The Shopify-only options appear only when your Shopify store is connected to OptiMonk. On every other store the panel offers two coupon types instead of three.
1. Create the fixed discount code in Shopify, from OptiMonk
On other platforms you have to create the discount in your store's admin yourself, otherwise your store will not recognise the code your popup shows. On a connected Shopify store OptiMonk checks it for you — and creates it if it is missing.
Pick Fixed code as the coupon type and type your code into the Coupon code field.
OptiMonk looks the code up in Shopify (Checking in Shopify…) and tells you what it found:
✓ Exists in Shopify — followed by the discount and, if there is one, — expires: <date>. Nothing else to do.
This code doesn't exist in Shopify yet — visitors couldn't redeem it. — see step 3.
This code has already expired in Shopify. or This code has already hit its usage limit. — followed by Replace it, or extend it in the store. Change the code here, or fix the discount in your Shopify admin.
To create the missing discount without leaving OptiMonk, click Create it in Shopify, then set:
the discount type: Percentage (%) or Amount
the value
an end date and time — optional. Empty expiration = never expires.
Click Create "<your code>". The status line turns into ✓ Exists in Shopify.
💡 If the Shopify check itself cannot run you get "The Shopify check failed — it's worth verifying the code by hand." That is about the check, not about your code — look the discount up in your Shopify admin.
2. Shopify coupon: a unique, single-use code per visitor
Choose Shopify coupon as the coupon type (A unique, single-use code is generated in Shopify.) and OptiMonk generates the codes for you at display time — you do not have to create or upload anything in Shopify.
Set the following:
Discount — Percentage (%) or Amount (store currency), plus the value.
Code prefix (optional) — a fixed part in front of the generated code, so you can recognise your popup's codes in the Shopify admin. With the prefix
BLACKFRIDAYthe visitor gets something likeBLACKFRIDAY-X3F2A.Expiration — three options:
No expiration
Counted from display — a number plus minutes / hours / days, counted from the moment the visitor sees the code. This is the one to use for urgency ("your code is valid for 30 minutes").
At a fixed time — the same deadline for everyone.
The panel spells out what will happen: On display a unique, single-use discount code is created in your Shopify account (<your-shop>.myshopify.com). The system fills the code's place on the popup; a fixed-code button label becomes "Copy code" live.
You will find the generated discounts on the Discounts page of your Shopify Admin, marked with the blue App icon that shows they were created by an app — and you can see there whether they have been used.
What about the wheel and the scratch card?
Gamified popups do not use this panel for their prizes. A Lucky wheel or a Scratch card carries its own prize table, and each winning row has its own Coupon code and a Weight that decides the odds:
Open the element's settings from the canvas (Wheel settings / Scratch card settings).
Fill in the Label (or Prize name), the Coupon code and the Weight per row. The Chance column is calculated from the weights.
An empty coupon code makes a losing slice; a weight of
0switches a row off.
So on a gamified popup you enter real, existing discount codes per prize — which means those discounts have to exist in your Shopify admin.
3. Auto redeem: apply the discount at checkout
Switch on Automatic redemption — the code applies itself at checkout — and your visitor does not have to remember or paste anything: the discount is already there when they check out.
The switch appears on connected Shopify stores. With a fixed code it becomes available once the code is confirmed to exist in Shopify.
When you are done, press Save in the coupon panel, then Save & Exit in the editor. If the campaign is already live, your change is pushed to it.
