A scratch card hides the prize behind an opaque layer the visitor has to scratch off. It is one of the nicest ways to collect newsletter subscribers: ask for the email address first, and the scratching is the reward.

There is no template library to pick a scratch card from any more. You ask for one.

Create a scratch card popup

  1. On the home page, describe what you want — for example "Create a scratch card popup where visitors scratch to reveal a discount code in exchange for their email address."

  2. The agent asks a few questions about your shop and your offer, then draws design concepts with the scratch card on them. Open one, ask for changes if you want, and pick the one to go with.

  3. On the way to the campaign you get a Prizes step: this is where the prize table lives — what the prizes are called, which code each one gives, and how often each comes up.

  4. Finish the steps and click Build it.

The card's look — the cover, the colours, the fonts — comes from the design. If you want it different, say so in the chat and the agent redraws it.

The prize table

The table is always 4 rows, and the panel says what that means: Every visitor scratches and wins exactly ONE of these 4 prizes — the odds below are the chance of each.

ColumnWhat it is
Prize titleThe prize as the visitor sees it (up to 40 characters)
Coupon codeThe code that prize gives (up to 64 characters)
WeightHow likely that prize is, relative to the others (1–99)
ChanceCalculated for you from the weights
  • Weight 0 = unused row — the row is simply not in play, and the table shows it as unused row.

  • At least one winning prize is required: a row counts as a winner when it has a prize title, a coupon code and a weight above 0.

  • Use the weights to shape the economics: put a higher weight on the smaller discount so it comes up often, and a lower one on the generous discount so it stays rare.

Of course a scratch card works with a single prize too — fill in one row, leave the rest at weight 0, and everyone finds the same code.

Running an A/B test with more than one scratch card? The step lets you choose One table for everyone (The same prizes for every scratch variant) or Separate per variant (A different prize table per variant).

Editing the card later

Open the campaign, open the popup in the editor, and click the scratch card. The panel says what it is: This is the scratch card — its look comes from the design. The cover message, how many panels the visitor sees and the prize table are configured in the scratch card settings.

Click Scratch card settings (message, panels, prizes), and you can set:

  • Cover message — the text over the unscratched surface, shown until the visitor starts. Keep it short; it is not a second headline.

  • Panels1 panel or 4 panels (2×2). This is how many surfaces the visitor sees; the panel count does not change the odds, because the prize is drawn on the server either way. (With one panel there is no losing tile — that panel always wins.)

  • The prize table described above, with the columns Prize name / Coupon code / Weight / Chance.

  • Scratch coverSolid or Gradient (with an Angle). This is the layer the visitor scratches off; a metallic silver-grey reads as a scratch card to most people.

  • Winning tile / Losing tile — optional images you can Upload or Clear. Left empty, the tile is drawn from the prize name and the design's colours. An uploaded image replaces that entirely and is shown as-is, so put the prize text into the image itself. Both sit under the cover, so they are previewed in the panel rather than on the canvas.

Coupon codes on a scratch card

Only fixed coupon codes work on a scratch card. Every prize carries its own, pre-defined code, so everyone who reveals that prize gets that same code. A unique-code pool cannot be used here, because the code is a property of the prize, not of the visitor.

After the scratching the popup moves on to its thank-you page, which shows the visitor the code they won — the right code for the right visitor is filled in automatically.

Important: create the discount codes manually in your store and type them into the prize table. The Shopify coupon auto-redemption is not available for the scratch card.
