Every button on your popup can do something different when a visitor clicks it — move to the next page, close the popup, copy the coupon code, or send the visitor to a page of your choice. This article is about that last one.
Set up the redirect
Open your popup in the editor and click the button you want to change.
In the right-hand Visual panel, find the Behavior (on click) section.
Open Action on click and choose Redirect (URL).
The full list of actions is: Next page, Jump to page, Redirect (URL), Close, Copy coupon code, Phone call. A button starts out on Next page.
Type the destination into the URL field, starting with
http://orhttps://.
That is it — from now on, clicking the button takes the visitor to that page.
The two switches under the URL
Open in new tab — on by default. The visitor keeps your page open and the destination opens next to it. Switch it off if you want the redirect to happen in the same tab.
Keep query parameters — carries the parameters of the current page over to the destination URL. Useful when you run campaigns with UTM tags and want them to survive the jump.
The URL has to be valid
OptiMonk checks the address while you type it, and tells you what is wrong:
Add the destination URL for the redirect.
The URL must start with http:// or https://.
This doesn't look like a valid URL.
As long as one of these is showing, the popup cannot be saved: the editor answers a save attempt with "A button redirect URL is missing or invalid — fix it in the button's settings (Behavior → URL). The campaign can't be saved until then." This is deliberate — a broken redirect button is worse than no button at all.
Does the click count as a conversion?
At the bottom of the Behavior (on click) section there is a Count as conversion switch. Turn it on when clicking the button is a success you want to see in your reports, and off when it is not.
One exception: on a dismiss button (a No thanks type button) the row is locked and reads Dismiss button — never counted as a conversion. A rejection is never reported as a success.
Ideas for using it
Cross-sell. Selling a dress? Show a popup when it is added to the cart, suggest a matching accessory, and send the visitor straight to that product page.
Send people to the offer. A popup that announces a sale converts better when the button lands on the sale collection instead of just closing.
Send people off-site on purpose — a booking page, a survey, an app store listing. Leave Open in new tab on so your shop stays open behind it.
Before you finish
Redirects are set on the button of the view you are editing. If your popup has separate desktop and mobile designs, switch views with the monitor / phone buttons in the header and check the button there too.
Press Save or Save & Exit. On a published campaign, saving pushes the change to your live popup.
Use Preview in the top bar to click the button through before you launch.
