The Spent on site rule is useful if you want to give visitors a certain amount of time to browse your website before displaying the popup. You set a number of seconds, and the campaign can only show once the visitor has spent that long on your site.
Use this field to give visitors a certain period of time to browse your website before displaying the popup, irrespective of the number of subpages viewed.
How to set it up
Open Campaigns in the left menu and click the campaign you want to edit.
Open the Settings tab of the campaign.
Scroll to Who should see the popup and click Add new rule. The picker opens with Pick a condition. Rules are combined with AND.
Pick Spent on site — Seconds spent browsing.
This is a very simple rule: you only need to define a number. The line reads Spent at least ⟨number⟩ seconds on the site. It starts at 30 seconds — type your own value over it.
Click Save in the modal, then Save changes in the bar at the bottom of the page.
On a campaign that is already published, the saved rule is pushed to the live campaign, so a targeting change takes effect without publishing again.
💡 You can also ask the assistant on the right to do this for you — for example "only show it after 30 seconds on the site".
How the timer works
The timer you set here starts when one of the pages of your website is fully loaded. When visitors browse your website, they will probably visit multiple URLs: different pages of your website. The timer will start when the first visited page of your website fully loaded, and it will continue to run while the visitor is browsing your website. Once the time reaches your set threshold, the "Spent on site" requirement of your campaign will be fulfilled to show the popup.
Good to know
Once saved, the rule appears as a card reading Spent at least ⟨n⟩ seconds on the site. Click the card to change the number.
Spent on site counts the whole visit across subpages. If you want to measure only the page the visitor is on right now, use Spent on pages — Seconds spent on current page — instead. The two are separate rules and can be combined.
Targeting rules are combined with AND: the popup shows up only if ALL of the rules are met at the same time. The connector between two rule cards says AND out loud.
Each rule type can be added once — a Spent on site rule already on the campaign is greyed out in the picker with an Added tag. Open the existing card to change it.
The rule decides who can see the popup, not when it appears on the page. The moment of appearance comes from the triggers in When will the popup show up — for example After a delay — so the two work together: the visitor first has to qualify, then the trigger fires.
