OptiMonk gives you several settings to control when your campaign appears: triggers decide when it shows up, targeting rules decide who sees it, and frequency decides how many times a visitor sees your message.
Where to find it
Open Campaigns in the left menu and click the campaign you want to edit.
Open the Settings tab of the campaign. The page has three sections: When will the popup show up, Who should see the popup, and How often can it appear.
Click the card in the How often can it appear section. The panel that opens asks: How often can this campaign appear to a visitor?
Change the settings (see below), click Save, then Save changes in the bar at the bottom of the page.
On a campaign that is already published, the change is pushed to the live campaign, so you don't have to publish it again.
💡 You can also ask the assistant on the right to change this for you — for example "show it at most twice a day".
The three frequency settings
Each of the first two settings has a checkbox in front of it. Disable a limit by unchecking its box — the campaign can then show without that restriction.
Show at most … time(s) per visitor
How many times the campaign may appear for one visitor at all. A sticky reminder about a free shipping threshold can show as many times as needed, but a signup popup or a product recommendation shown too often disrupts the browsing experience and makes it less enjoyable.
Wait at least … between impressions
How much time has to pass before the campaign can show again to the same visitor. You set a number and a unit: second(s), minute(s), hour(s) or day(s).
The timer starts when the popup appears for your visitor. If the visitor fills out the form, the popup will not show again, since the campaign goal has been met. The popup can only appear once each time a page loads — it can reappear only if the page is reloaded or the visitor goes to another page on your site. If a visitor closes the popup without filling it out, the timer starts, and the popup won't show again until the time you set here has passed.
Stop showing
Two independent checkboxes that end the campaign for that visitor early, even if the maximum number of impressions has not been reached:
after a visitor has converted — they filled in the form, so they don't need the offer again;
after a visitor has closed it — they dismissed the campaign, so don't ask again.
If you run a Christmas sale announcement or a newsletter signup popup, you may want to hide it from visitors who closed it without signing up. For a dynamic product recommendation — a browsing reminder or a cart abandonment campaign — you may want to keep it visible until the visitor converts.
The defaults
A new campaign starts with:
Show at most 1 time per visitor — on;
Wait at least 1 hour between impressions — on;
Stop showing after a visitor has converted — on;
Stop showing after a visitor has closed it — off.
Until you change anything, the frequency card simply reads Default frequency settings. Once you do, the card summarises what you set — for example Max 2 times per visitor · min 30 minutes between impressions · stop after convert.
Good to know
Frequency caps apply per visitor.
If a visitor closes the popup, it won't appear again until they refresh or reload the page.
The On click trigger ignores the frequency caps. If your campaign is triggered by a click on a specific element, a click always shows the campaign as long as the targeting rules match.
Frequency is set per campaign. If you run many campaigns and want an account-wide limit on how much your visitors see, use the User Experience Protector in Settings — it makes sure your popups don't overwhelm or annoy visitors even if you run hundreds of campaigns with the boldest targeting.
